Niamh & Ciaran, Orlagh House, Rathfarnham

If you're planning a wedding at Orlagh House in Rathfarnham and wondering whether it photographs well, I can tell you from first-hand experience: it really does. Niamh and Ciarán's wedding on April 10th 2026 was my first time shooting at Orlagh House, and it won't be my last. This is a full account of the day, from a documentary wedding photographer in Ireland who was there for every moment of it.

Orlagh House: The Venue

Orlagh House sits in the foothills of the Dublin mountains in Rathfarnham, D16, with a sweeping tree-lined driveway that opens out to views across Dublin Bay. It's grand without being stiff, and the grounds offer a genuinely beautiful mix of formal architecture and natural landscape. As a Dublin wedding photographer, I've shot at a lot of venues across the city and county — Orlagh House is a real find.

The heart of the venue is a large function room that does serious work across the day. It held the ceremony for 140 guests, then turned into the dining room, then the dancefloor. The team there turned it around three times and each time it looked like it had always been set that way. Walking back in after the ceremony, once the florals were fully on display alongside the room's own character, I actually stopped for a second. Pastels everywhere — soft greens and yellows from the flowers — and on one side of the room, a large blue and multicoloured pipe organ unlike anything I've seen in a wedding venue before. The whole space had this warm, eccentric, joyful energy that matched the couple completely.

140 guests is probably at the outer limit of what the ceremony and dinner space holds, but it worked completely in its favour. It was loud, vibrant and felt like a proper party from the moment people sat down.

Tatiana, the wedding coordinator, was outstanding from start to finish. Calm, warm and completely across every detail all day. The kind of person who makes a wedding photographer's job easier without you ever having to ask.

The Arrival

Niamh's father Eamon has two beautiful classic cars, and he brought Niamh to Orlagh House in his 1969 Rolls Royce Silver Shadow. There are few approaches to a venue more cinematic than that tree-lined driveway with Dublin laid out in the background, and the late afternoon light as the car came up the drive was everything. Niamh stepped out and went straight into her first look with Ciarán in front of Orlagh House, Dublin Bay behind them. No prompting required. Just two people who were completely ready for the moment.

The Ceremony

Niamh and Ciarán married at 3:45pm with the ceremony led by Niamh's cousin Feargh Curtis. Feargh — known as @celebratewithfeargh — is both a celebrant and an opera singer of rare talent, and he told me before the ceremony that his one focus for the day was not crying. He kept it together, just about. I heard his voice crack once or twice during the more personal stories about the couple, and there wasn't a dry eye in the room for much of it.

What made Feargh's ceremony so special was how genuinely personal it was. He knew this couple, knew their families, and it showed in everything he said.

The Celtic hand binding was one of the moments Niamh had flagged as something she was looking forward to, and it was every bit as powerful as those rituals tend to be. Each family member came up in turn and said a few words as the cord was bound. By turns funny and deeply moving. Niamh and Ciarán laughed and cried, sometimes at the same time

Ceremony music was provided by Vegas Trad.

If you're curious about how ceremony timing flows into the rest of the day, I've written a full wedding day timeline guide that's worth a read.

The Couple

Niamh and Ciarán are one of those couples who needed almost no direction during the couple shoot. Relaxed, completely at ease with each other and totally comfortable in front of the camera. Gorgeous together in every sense. They have a quiet confidence as a pair that makes documentary-style wedding photography feel completely effortless. No posing required — just two people being themselves. Exactly the kind of shooting I love. You can see more of my approach on the about page.

The Reception

One of the most original details I've ever seen at a wedding: instead of a traditional cake cutting, Niamh and Ciarán had each table bake their own cake. Every table had one at its centre, and the couple went table to table cutting each one. It was joyful, chaotic and completely them. The room absolutely loved it.

The Brass Monkeys played the reception and first dance was Forever in Blue Jeans by Neil Diamond. An excellent choice.

Florals and Décor

Roisín Bowling, one of Niamh's bridesmaids, runs Flower Pop and was responsible for the florals throughout Orlagh House on the day. The results were stunning. Pastels in full bloom, and — first time I've ever seen this — grapes woven into the tablescape. It worked completely and gave the tables this abundant, slightly unexpected character that felt entirely right for the day. Having someone so close to the couple responsible for how the venue looked added something genuinely special.

A Small World

This wedding was particularly special for me because of how many threads ran through it.

I photographed Roisín and Dara's wedding previously, and Dara — who is also my hairdresser — was Ciarán's best man on the day. He was not just best man but also very much rolled his sleeves up helping Roisín set up the room. That kind of wedding party makes everything run beautifully.

Annie, who photographed alongside me, had photographed one of the very first weddings Feargh ever solemnized. Walking into that ceremony felt like a reunion for everyone involved.

And then there's Niamh's brother Joe and his wife Aoife. I photographed their wedding at Dublin City Hall a few months ago, and I'd also had the family into the studio for a session with their little boy Séamie, who is 18 months old. Seeing both families together and doing so well was one of those quiet joys of this job.
