A Dublin City Hall Wedding: Your Complete Guide
If you are putting together a Dublin City Hall wedding, then you’re in for a treat… There are not many places in the country where history, architecture and soft Dublin light all come together this beautifully. I have photographed a lot of weddings here over the years, including Eimear and Mark’s and Bailey and Joe’s and every time I walk inside I still get that little moment of awe when you step into the Rotunda. It is one of the most stunningly elegant places to have a wedding ceremony in the city and possibly even country.
Full disclosure upfront, I LOVE the place. That definitely brings with it biases but this guide will attempt to walk you through everything you need to know. What the space looks like. The best photo spots. The timing. The light. The logistics. And why City Hall works so well for couples who want a stylish, simple ceremony in the heart of Dublin. Couples who want something relaxed and meaningful.
Why City Hall Is One of Dublin’s Best Wedding Ceremony Venues
The first thing and obvious thing is the shape. City Hall is circular. When you stand in the middle of the Rotunda, you are surrounded by columns and statues and golden details that give the space a quiet, timeless feeling. There is no bad angle anywhere. The architecture does all the work.
The second thing is the light. It comes down through the dome in a way that feels almost theatrical. Sometimes you get a natural spotlight from above, like the image of the bride standing in the beam of light. Other times it is soft and even, and it wraps around people beautifully. For documentary work, it is a dream.
City Hall also looks its best when couples keep the decor simple. You do not need much here. The space already has so much character that even one floral arrangement or a few candles can feel like enough.
Where to Stand, Enter and Sit: How the Ceremony Layout Works
City Hall ceremonies usually take place right in the centre under the dome. Guests sit in a semicircle around you which feels intimate and allows everyone to see everything. When the music starts and you begin your walk in, you enter between the pillars with the city behind you. It is one of the most iconic entrances in Dublin and it always looks incredible in photographs.
The registrars sit off to the side. Speeches and readings happen right in front of the columns. There are no awkward corners and no distracting backgrounds. Everything feels intentional.
If you want time for family photos, the side space near the statues works really well. It keeps everyone together and gives you a bit of privacy from guests while still keeping the tone relaxed.
The Light in City Hall: What You Need to Know
The light here is something else. Even on grey days there is a natural softness that makes skin tones look warm and flattering. But the real magic happens when the sun hits the dome. You get that spotlight effect, a bright pool of light on the floor that moves as the day goes on. It is dramatic in the best possible way and it makes for some of the most memorable photographs.
If you walk in during a sunny moment, you get a little cinematic glow. If it is cloudy, everything becomes soft and calm. Both are beautiful.
This is one of the reasons I love photographing weddings here. You do not need to stage anything. The moments happen naturally and the light shapes them.
Best Times of Day for Ceremony Photos
If you have the option, late morning to mid afternoon works beautifully in City Hall. The dome light is strongest then and it looks fantastic for both the entrance and the ceremony itself.
Ceremonies usually run about 25 to 35 minutes depending on readings. It moves quickly so the moments come fast. If documentary photography matters to you, this is a great place for it. You are surrounded by your guests, emotions are close and everything is visible. It is a ceremony where nothing gets lost.
My Favourite Photo Spots Inside City Hall
There are a few areas I return to every time because they never fail.
1. The entrance between the pillars
This is the classic City Hall shot. You stepping in with your partner or with a parent. The scale, the symmetry and the depth behind you make it look pure Dublin.
2. The centre circle under the dome
Perfect for couple portraits or a quiet moment together. The marble floor, the symmetry, the light. Everything sits beautifully here.
3. The spotlight area
This is the beam of light you see in the image you shared. When it hits, it creates one of the most striking documentary moments in the whole venue.
4. The side space near the statues
Ideal for family photos and groups. Clean background, consistent light, private enough to keep people relaxed.
My Favourite Photo Spots Within 1–3 Minutes Walk
Once the ceremony wraps up, you have some amazing nearby locations for a quick portrait walk.
1. Dame Street
Classic city shots with Dublin energy. The traffic, the colours, the movement. Makes for great documentary frames.
2. The steps of City Hall
A lovely transition moment and a perfect place for confetti or hugs with guests.
3. Dublin Castle
You are only seconds away. The colourful walls and quiet corners are fantastic for portraits.
4. Trinity College (if time allows)
A short walk but worth it. Arches, old stone, long pathways and beautiful natural light.
5. The alleyways behind Parliament Street
If you like something a little more urban and textured.
These spots let you keep the session short so you can get straight back to your guests.
Family Photos at City Hall
Because City Hall is a busy public building during the day, it works best to keep family photos simple and quick. The side space gives you enough privacy to get through the list without getting overwhelmed or pulled in too many directions.
If you want a couple of variations, we can do those too, but keeping things streamlined always leads to a more relaxed experience.
Getting From City Hall to Your Reception
Most couples leave City Hall and go straight to their reception venue. Popular choices include:
Fallon and Byrne
Marco Pierre Whites
The Shelbourne
The Westbury
No. 25 Fitzwilliam Place
Trinity City Hotel
Café en Seine if you want a lively drinks reception
If you are heading to the Merrion, you are only a few minutes away. Fallon and Byrne is a lovely option too and pairs really well with the style of City Hall.
What Happens If It Rains
Rain is not an issue here at all. You have the full rotunda for indoor portraits, family photos and natural moments. Even if the weather is wild, you can still get beautiful images without stepping outside.
If the rain passes quickly, we can nip out to Dame Street or Dublin Castle. If it does not, we stay inside and let the architecture do the work. Some of my favourite documentary moments in City Hall have happened on rainy days.
Parking and Logistics
Parking can be tricky around Dame Street, especially at weekends. There are a few options.
Park Rite on Drury Street
Park Rite on Christchurch Place
Q-Park on Dawson Street
Leave the car at your reception hotel and walk or take a taxi
Guests usually arrive by taxi which keeps it simple.
Allow a few extra minutes for traffic if you are arriving from the other side of the city. Dublin moves slowly at the best of times.
Why Full Day Coverage Works Beautifully with City Hall
You can have morning prep at home or in a hotel like The Westbury or The Shelbourne, your ceremony in City Hall, a relaxed portrait stroll through the city and then a beautiful reception in a venue like The Merrion.
From a photography point of view, the day flows naturally. You get emotional prep moments, the architecture and intimacy of City Hall and then the celebration in a warm, elegant space. Full day coverage lets the whole story breathe.

Final Thoughts
City Hall is one of my favourite places to photograph in Dublin. It is elegant, it is full of atmosphere and it does not need anything extra. The light is incredible, the architecture shapes the moments and the whole experience feels calm and meaningful.
