Shelbourne Hotel Wedding Photography: Guide for Weddings

I'm Kevin Kheffache, a documentary Dublin wedding photographer based twenty minutes from St Stephen's Green. I've photographed weddings in the Shelbourne and around it: mornings in the suites, a first look in the Constitution Room, the walk across the Green with a wedding party trailing behind. This guide covers what the hotel gives your photographs, which rooms suit which moments, and how I work on a Shelbourne wedding day.

Why the Shelbourne photographs so well

The building has stood on St Stephen's Green since 1824, and you can feel that history. The entrance hall, the staircase, morning light falling across the carpets. A bride crossing that lobby, or a grandmother holding court in a suite upstairs, picks up the weight of the place without anyone posing a thing.

Stephens Green is just across the road, so you have gardens and old trees within a two-minute walk of your drinks reception. Grafton Street and Trinity College are minutes further. Few venues in Ireland let you move between five-star interiors and the life of a city that easily, and in my guide to Dublin's best wedding venues the Shelbourne scores a 9 out of 10 for photography.

The rooms

The Constitution Room. One of the finest rooms in Dublin for a first look: ornate ceiling, deep colours, a scale that makes you feel you're standing inside something that matters. The committee that drafted Ireland's first constitution met in this room in 1922, and the room carries that history lightly. At Aoife and Oisín's wedding, Oisín saw Aoife here for the first time on the day, and they came back to the same room for dinner and speeches. The light and proportions flatter a quiet two-person moment as much as a table of twenty-two.

The Great Room. The ballroom, and the space for the big celebrations. It holds around 300 guests, with high ceilings, chandeliers, and floor enough for a dance floor that gets used.

The suites. Morning preparations at the Shelbourne run calm, even with a full room. The suites give you window light and enough space for the people who matter to move around each other.

A first look at the Shelbourne

If you're considering doing a first look, the Constitution Room makes a strong case for yes. You get the reaction in a room built for the moment and portraits while everyone is fresh, and your afternoon opens up for the Green and the city. Oisín cried when he saw Aoife there. A tiny bit, but it counts. I went slow and stayed quiet.

St Stephen's Green and the city

A Shelbourne wedding gives you Dublin itself as a second venue. The Green is across the road for portraits under the trees, and from there you can walk to Grafton Street or down to Trinity College. This is my favourite part of a city wedding: a couple in full wedding clothes moving through a busy street, the world carrying on around them. On the walk back at one wedding, Aoife and Oisín cut through a crowd gathered around a busker, and the whole crowd cheered.

Larger shoots in St Stephen's Green or Trinity College can need permission. I'll guide you on this so you don't have to think about it.

Seasons

Spring and summer bring the Green into full leaf, and portraits outside carry that soft Irish light. Autumn and winter belong to the interiors: lamplight, warm tones, the hotel dressed for Christmas from late November. I've photographed Dublin city weddings in every season and the Shelbourne holds up in all of them. The balance shifts between the Green and the rooms, nothing more.

Pricing

Contact the Shelbourne for current wedding packages. Pricing changes, so get figures from the venue rather than from a blog post. Expect five-star pricing.

How I photograph a Shelbourne wedding

I work in a relaxed, documentary way. I follow the day as it unfolds, focus on what happens between you and your guests, and make a small set of natural portraits along with whatever family photographs you need. If you'd like short vertical clips for social media, I can add content creation to your package. See my wedding photography packages; I send full prices in my first reply.

A real Shelbourne wedding

Aoife and Oisín married at the Shelbourne with twenty-two guests: a first look and dinner in the Constitution Room, and a walk to Trinity College, where they first met. The two of them were at ease with each other all day, and the photographs show it. See their full wedding here.

Shelbourne wedding FAQs

Is the Shelbourne Hotel a good wedding venue?
One of Dublin's most recognisable buildings and one of its best venues for photography: two centuries of history, rooms from intimate to grand, and St Stephen's Green at the door.

How many guests can the Shelbourne accommodate?
The Great Room holds around 300. Smaller rooms suit intimate weddings. Aoife and Oisín celebrated with twenty-two guests in the Constitution Room, and the day felt full.

Do we need a permit for photographs in St Stephen's Green?
Casual portraits are fine. Larger setups in the Green or Trinity College can need permission, and I handle the guidance on that.

Is a first look worth doing at the Shelbourne?
Yes, and the Constitution Room is the reason. You get the reaction in the finest room in the building, and your timeline opens up for the city afterwards.

Do you photograph small Shelbourne weddings?
Yes. Some of my favourite days there have been the small ones. The building fills the frame when the guest list is short, and the day moves at a pace that suits how I shoot.
