Luttrellstown Castle Wedding Photography — A Photographer's Complete Guide

Luttrelstown Caslte, Dublin

I have photographed weddings at Luttrellstown Castle more times than I can count and it still does something to me every single time I drive through those gates. Twenty minutes from Dublin city centre and you are suddenly on a 560-acre private estate with a 15th-century castle rising in front of you. The long sweeping avenue through the parkland. The Virginia creeper draped across the facade. Guests arriving and going quiet for a second because nothing quite prepares you for it.

If you are researching Luttrellstown for your wedding this guide is built from real experience shooting here. Not a brochure rewrite. My honest take on the venue, the spaces, the photography, the things nobody tells you, and whether it is the right fit for you.

Who is Luttrellstown for?

Before anything else it is worth being straight about this. Luttrellstown is a luxury venue with a price tag to match. Packages start around €7,900 with a per-person cost on top ranging from €200 to €240 depending on the package and guest numbers. For Friday and Saturday weddings in peak season you are looking at a minimum of roughly 100 guests for the castle itself. If you are working with a smaller budget or a smaller guest list the Clubhouse venue on the same estate is worth exploring separately.

What you get in return is genuinely one of the most complete wedding experiences in Ireland. Exclusive use of the entire estate. Accommodation for up to 60 guests on site. A dedicated wedding team. Food that is consistently among the best I have seen at any Irish venue. And grounds that give a documentary photographer almost unlimited material to work with

The Ceremony Spaces

Luttrellstown is approved for civil ceremonies, humanist celebrations and civil partnerships so you can hold your entire day on the estate without leaving.

The Kentian Room is the most popular indoor ceremony space. High ceilings, original tapestries, a marble fireplace and room for up to 100 guests. It is a warm and elegant room that feels intimate even when full. For larger ceremonies the Gothic Hall takes up to 130 guests and has the kind of vaulted ceilings and original stonework that makes every photograph feel cinematic.

The outdoor ceremony option on the castle lawn is the one that tends to stop people in their tracks. With the 15th-century facade behind you, 560 acres of private parkland stretching out and a 20-acre lake in the distance, it is as dramatic as Irish weddings get. Weather dependent obviously but when the sun is out there is nothing that compares.

For couples who prefer a church ceremony first, St Mochta's Church on Luttrellstown Road is about five minutes away. St Brigid's Church in Castleknock is a listed national monument with a Harry Clarke stained glass window and is genuinely beautiful to photograph. The drive back through the castle gates after a church ceremony is always one of the best arrivals of the day.

Inside the Castle

The Library in Luttrelstown Castle

Luttrellstown defies the dark and cold castle stereotype. The entrance foyer with its grand staircase and red carpet is welcoming and full of light. Every photographer I know loves working here.

The Van Stry Ballroom is the main reception and dining room seating up to 120 guests. Floor-to-ceiling windows flood it with natural light during the day and the chandelier centrepieces take over in the evening. Despite its scale it consistently feels intimate even for smaller weddings of 30 or 40 guests.

The Kentian Room connects to the Van Stry via double doors and seats an additional 60 guests bringing the combined capacity to 180. The flexibility of being able to open or close those doors depending on your numbers is one of those practical details that makes a real difference on the day.

The Library is my favourite room in the castle. Plush leather Chesterfield sofas, a wood-burning fireplace, floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the estate and allegedly a secret bookshelf door that I have never actually found. Drinks receptions flow naturally through here and into the drawing rooms and foyer. On fine days everything spills out onto the lawns and terraces.

The Billiards Room downstairs with snooker and whiskey is the kind of thing that turns a wedding into a proper weekend. These side rooms are what separate a castle experience from a function room in a hotel.

The Morning: Getting Ready

Both Cherry and Edward got ready at the castle on their wedding morning which made for a beautifully unhurried start to the day. No rushing between locations, just the estate waking up around everyone.

A recent addition to Luttrellstown is the Beauty Salon, a converted pottery barn sitting within the Walled Garden. It has LED-lit hair and makeup stations, a hair wash station, a living area with Bluetooth speakers and a wine fridge. It is a well-thought-out space and a big improvement on getting ready in a hotel bedroom. One practical thing worth knowing: castle access on your wedding day starts at 3pm unless you book from the night before. If you want to use the Salon on the morning of the wedding you need to book for at least two nights. If you can stretch to it, do. A relaxed rehearsal dinner the evening before and a proper morning in the Salon is worth the extra cost.

Accommodation

The castle has 20 individually designed bedrooms sleeping approximately 50 guests. Every room is unique. Period pieces, antiques, four-poster beds, roaring fireplaces and freestanding bathtubs. No televisions, which is a deliberate choice and part of what makes the whole place feel like a genuine escape. One of the joys of the castle rooms is that couples can tour them in advance and assign specific rooms to specific guests, which people absolutely love.

The standout room is the Aileen Plunket suite, the former owner's bedroom, with a four-poster bed and a freestanding copper bathtub. It tends to go to the couple.

The Gardener's Cottage in the Walled Garden sleeps an additional 10 guests across five double bedrooms with a private patio and its own kitchen and living area. It is ideal for the bridal party or immediate family.

For guests not staying on the estate, Castleknock Hotel is five minutes away and the obvious first choice. Crowne Plaza Blanchardstown and Clayton Hotel Liffey Valley are both within ten minutes. The castle team can help coordinate shuttles.

Photography at Luttrellstown: Where I Go and Why

This is the section I really want couples to read because Luttrellstown is one of those venues where the difference between a photographer who knows it and one who doesn't shows up very clearly in the images.

The temptation is to stay close to the castle and use the Gothic facade as the backdrop for everything. That works and it looks great. But the best images I have taken here come from going further out into the estate and looking back. The scale only becomes clear from a distance and there is something about that long view across the grounds with the castle sitting in the trees that is hard to beat.

My go-to spots:

The bridge. Clean architectural lines and a strong reflection in the right light. Works in every season.

The turret staircase. Dramatic even in flat light. The spiral gives you a natural frame and couples naturally relax because they have something to interact with.

The Walled Garden. Quieter and more intimate than the open grounds. Works particularly well for smaller editorial moments between the couple.

The castle facade from the bushes looking back. Getting distance from the building and shooting back through the trees and shrubs gives you depth and layers that a straight-on shot never achieves.

The library. For interior portraits this is the best room in the building. The window light is consistent and the leather and wood tones work beautifully with almost any wedding palette.

The 20-acre lake and woodland walks. Underused by most photographers. If you have time in the afternoon these are worth the walk.

August at Luttrellstown, as I found with Cherry and Edward's wedding, means long evenings and warm golden light blazing across the estate. Strong midday sun can be challenging but the mature trees across the grounds provide pockets of soft shade that are ideal for portraits at any time of day. You can see exactly what that looks like in Cherry and Edward's full wedding gallery.

Honest Pros and Cons

Worth being direct about this.

The pros are obvious. Luttrellstown is one of the finest wedding venues in Ireland. The exclusivity is real, the food is genuinely excellent, the grounds are extraordinary, and the team know what they are doing. It photographs beautifully in every season. If you have the budget and the guest numbers it is very hard to argue against it.

The honest cons: it is expensive and the minimum guest numbers for peak season weekend dates are a genuine constraint for couples who want something smaller and more intimate. Castle access from 3pm on the day is also worth knowing in advance since it shapes how your morning works unless you book the extra night. And the Beauty Salon while excellent can feel tight for larger bridal parties of seven or eight people.

One other thing. Because Luttrellstown is an exclusive hire venue with only one wedding at a time, booking well in advance is essential. Popular dates go 18 to 24 months out.

Other Dublin Castle Venues Worth Considering

If Luttrellstown is on your list you are probably also looking at other castle venues in the Dublin area. Clontarf Castle in the city is a very different experience, more accessible and with its own strong identity. I cover both in my full guide to Ireland's top castle wedding venues if you want a broader comparison.
